Houston Astros right-hander Bryan Abreu received a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Texas Rangers outfielder Adolis García in Friday’s Game 5 of the American League Championship Series.
MLB didn’t suspend any other players for the benches-clearing incident but also fined García, Rangers pitcher Matt Bush, and injured Astros hurler Lance McCullers Jr. for their roles.
Bush and McCullers aren’t allowed to sit on their team benches for the remainder of the ALCS.
Astros manager Dusty Baker was also fined an undisclosed amount for his actions following his ejection from the game.
MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill said all six Game 5 umpires agreed that Abreu intentionally threw at García.
Abreu’s suspension begins Sunday in Game 6 of the ALCS unless he appeals. If the pitcher appeals, a hearing will take place within 48 hours, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
