It was an eventful and surprising night at AT&T Stadium, with Canelo Alvarez stopping Billy Joe Saunders on an eye injury after eight rounds in the main event, plus controversy up and down the three-fight main undercard.
Alvarez (56-1-2, 38 KO) now has the WBC, WBA, and WBO titles at super middleweight, lifting the WBO tonight from Saunders (30-1, 14 KO), who was boxing a decent fight and certainly competitive before his eye began swelling shut in the eighth round.
When the corner took a look between rounds, cameras caught Saunders himself looking a bit dejected, and then his team informed referee Mark Calo-oy of their decision to stop it before the ninth round began.
Saunders is already taking big criticism from fans, media, and fellow pro fighters alike; whether that’s “fair” or not is up to you to decide for yourself, but he was down on all three official scorecards and was unquestionably hurt on the big shot in round eight. He wasn’t the same the rest of that round, and he went back to the corner in clear pain.
